Description, Causes and Risk Factors:
Angular stomatitis is a disease of great annoying to people who contact it. It usually manifests itself at the mouth corners resembling small paper cuts and can be very raw and sore, causing those afflicted with it to have trouble opening their mouths eating, drinking or even smiling.
Both young, old, male and female affected equally.
While the cause of angular stomatitis is somewhat debated, systemic factors such as iron deficiency with or without anemia, diabetes mellitus, gastrointestinal disturbances, malnutrition, vitamin B2 deficiency, nicotinic acid, pantothenic acid, and folic acid deficiency have been diagnosed as etiologic factors of angular stomatitis.
Certain local factors have also been attributed to the etiology of angular stomatitis. The infections such as candida albicans, staphylococcus aureus, local allergic reaction to certain sensitizers may also causes angular cheilitis.
Risk factors may include:
Sun over exposure.
People staying in a cold environment generally fall prey to this disease. People often acquire this disease during winter season.
Saliva build-up with the possible involvement of yeast that causes lesion of lip joints.
Inflammation of the lesion caused by the disease.
In some severe cases, the cuts go deep into the skin and cause bleeding.
Formation of crusts on the infected area of lips.
Irritation of lips.
Difficulty in opening mouth wide.
Onset and spread of the disease angular stomatitis is clearly visible as it appears on the joints of lips and there is no internal growth of infection.
In several cases swabs and smears from the lesion are recommended for bacteriological culture and antibiotic sensitivity test. The doctor may also do a blood test to see if you have an immune system deficiency which can manifest itself through cheilitis.
Treatment of angular stomatitis varies depending on the cause. Your physician or medical practitioner will likely prescribe a steroid or antifungal topical cream to treat the infection and restoration of vitamin level in patient's body (which includes dosage of medicine that contains high level of Vitamin B2, folic acid and some other ingredients), application of antifungal, anti-inflammatory ointment/cream, use of medications etc.
People who have dentures can try to kill the bacteria by soaking them in water with one part bleach that will effectively kill any bacteria without causing any risk to your health. This is effective in killing any bacteria without risking your health be sure to completely rinse the dentures in cool water before reinserting them. If all goes well your angular stomatitis should be healed in a few days and you can get back to living your normal life.
