Antral gastritis: Description, Causes and Risk Factors

Antral gastritis is a digestive condition where an inflammation develops within the antrum or the lower portion of the stomach. It is this area of the stomach that is responsible for releasing its contents into the intestinal tract.

There are a lot of people who are suffering from antral gastritis worldwide. It can be present in an individual for a number of years without noticing any signs and symptoms.

Antral gastritis is usually caused by bacteria in the stomach, but it can also be caused due to stress and other viral infections. Antral gastritis usually begins with inflammation, in the bottom part of the stomach. However, it is important to remember that a pathogen is not the only way a person gets antral gastritis. They are other following factors, which aggravates antral gastritis, they may include:

  • Mental stress.
  • Food poisoning.
  • Use of anti-inflammatory drugs.

Generally, it is diagnosed by a procedure called `endoscopy', wherein a thin tube with a camera at the end is inserted into the stomach through the mouth and images of the stomach are taken so as to identify the problem.

A fresh ginger is chewed before taking meals stimulates digestion.

  • A teaspoon of carom seeds with a pinch of last is one of the effective remedies for gastritis.
  • Coconut water is excellent natural remedy for antral gastritis.
  • Application of heat through hot compressors or hot water twice a day with empty stomach is also proven beneficial.
  • High intake of water and juice also recommended.
  • Use of butter milk and curd along with asafetida and cumin water is highly beneficial.
  • One or two pieces of garlic rolled in dry grape without seeds also provide instant relief.

Pharmacological Treatment Options:

In order to treat antral gastritis first the patient should be examined by a physician, who will try to determine the cause of the gastritis. Then the physician can treat the patient, based on the cause of the antral gastritis. If the patient is affected due to bacteria, the bacteria will be eradicated by prescribing the use of antibiotics. The physician may also prescribe some antacids, to control symptoms, until the bacterium is completely eradicated.

If left untreated gastritis antrum can lead to a condition known as pangastritis. In the latter, the entire stomach will be affected by the bacterial attack causing discomfort and pain while slowing down digestive processes.

Preventive measure to avoid antral gastritis may include:

  • Eat fat-free foods.
  • Use vegetables, fruits and milk.
  • Have balanced meal with proper intervals of time.
  • Avoid alcohol and tobacco.
  • Eat slowly and do not overload your stomach.
  • Avoid spicy food, as it will worsen your stomach.
