Binswanger disease

Binswanger disease: Description, Causes and Risk Factors:Abbreviation: BD.Alternative Names: Subcortical vascular dementia, Binswanger encephalopathy, encephalitis subcorticalis chronica, subcortical arteriosclerotic encephalopathy.A chronic vascular dementia with hydrocephalus, it is characterized by severe thickening of small vessels and by diffuse regions of white matter loss with gliosis. Lacunar infarcts were also present.Binswanger diseaseThe exact cause of the Binswanger's disease is unknown but some scientist says that it is caused due to damage to the deep layers of white matter in the brain (basal ganglia and thalamus). The damage is the result of the thickening and narrowing (atherosclerosis) of arteries that feed the subcortical areas of the brain. Risk Factors Include:High blood pressure.
  • High cholesterol.
  • Diabetes.
  • Smoking.
While Binswanger's disease does not appear to follow a specific pattern of inheritance, genetics may play a role in the development of atherosclerosis. The disease typically begins late in the fourth decade of life and increases in severity with age.Symptoms:Mood changes.
  • Language disorder.
  • Mental deterioration.
  • Diseases of heart valve.
  • Muscle ataxia.
  • Impaired movements.
  • Epilepsy.
  • Fainting.
  • Bladder incontinence.
Diagnosis:It is difficult to diagnose the presence of Binswanger's disease, it is not impossible. With the use of a CT scan, as well as an MRI, we can identify.A vascular risk factor.
  • Cerebrovascular disease.
  • Subcortical cerebral dysfunction.
The histologic findings are diffuse, irregular loss of axons and myelin accompanied by widespread gliosis. Small infarcts may be seen in the frontal lobes. The pathologic mechanism may be damage caused by severe atherosclerosis.Treatment:There is no specific treatment for Binswanger's disease. Treatment is symptomatic. The main goal of treatment of Binswanger's disease is to reduce the symptoms. Medications such as hypotension or hypertension are very useful in the treatment of Binswanger's disease. The successful management of hypertension and diabetes can slow the progression of atherosclerosis, and subsequently slow the progress of Binswanger disease. People with depression or anxiety may require antidepressant medications. Because there is no cure, the best treatment is preventive, early in the adult years, by controlling risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, and smoking.Preventive measures include:Eating a healthy diet.
  • Do the regular exercise.
  • Avoid alcohol.
  • Avoid smoking.
