Hypovolemia: Description, Causes and Risk Factors:Alternative Name: Hyphemia.A decreased amount of blood in the body, more specifically decreased blood plasma.HypovolemiaHypovolemia occurs when the body has lost too much blood or body fluid to support normal circulation and body functions. Though it has many causes, less obvious causes of hypovolemia are internal bleeding and dehydration. Traumatic accidents, chronic illnesses, ruptured ectopic pregnancies, and surgery can all cause internal bleeding. Low fluid intake, extensive vomiting, and severe diarrhea are common causes of dehydration.Losing about 1/5 or more of the normal amount of blood in your body causes hypovolemic shock.Types may include:Mild .Moderate .Severe .The main treatment for hypovolemia is to replace blood or fluid that has been lost. If not corrected early, it will lead to hypovolemic shock, a serious condition that may result in organ failure and death.Symptoms:Mild:Diaphoresis.

Moderate:Diaphoresis.

  • Increased heart rate and respiration rate.
  • Decreased urine output.
Severe:Diaphoresis.

  • Hemodynamic instability.
  • Hypotension.
  • Altered mental status including coma.
Diagnosis:Low blood volume can only be detected by devices that can measure the volumes or pressures within blood vessels or heart chambers, such as central venous pressure, pulmonary capillary wedge pressures, or end-diastolic volume measurements.Treatment:Hypovolemia treatment and prevention tips:Keep the person warm and comfortable.
  • Use of intravenous fluids (IVs) may help compensate for lost fluid volume.
  • Oral fluids including moderate sugars and rich in electrolytes are needed to replenish the organism of lost sodium ions.
  • Intravenous (IV) line will be put into the persons arm to allow blood.
  • Blood transfusion is definitive treatment for hypovolemia caused by trauma.
