Kleptophobia or celptophobia: Description, Causes and Risk Factors:All called by the name harpaxophobia.KleptophobiaPhobia is a mundane anxiety disorder and often goes undiagnosed. According to American Psychiatric Association (APA) a phobia is an irrational and stalwart fear of an object or situation. In most cases phobias involves a sense of endangerment or a fear of harm. It is often related to amygdala, an area of brain considered as a part of limbic system. Amygdala plays a primary role in the processing and memory of emotional reactions. Phobic reactions can trigger through exposure to fear object or situation or just thinking about the feared object.Kleptophobia is an exaggerated fear of having something stolen from you or being robbed. The fear is usually started by a past experience. Sometime the victim of a robbery can have memories that last for many years. These types of memories can easily develop into a full blown phobia.The fear can be triggered by seeing TV programs, movies, and newspaper articles regarding robbery. There may be triggers associated with crime in the area where the kleptophobic resides.Symptoms:Some common symptoms includeRapid heartbeat. Diagnosis:The vast majority of cases of kleptophobia are self-diagnosed. The doctor may discuss the kleptophobic person about his symptoms and past experiences. More routinely, the doctor, after ruling out any physical reasons for the phobia, will refer this individual to a mental health professional (psychiatrist) for additional assessment and evaluation.Treatment:Like most phobias, kleptophobia can be successfully treated using a range of techniques. One of the most common is cognitive-behavioral therapy. This type of treatment helps you learn to stop your negative self talk and think more logically about theft. You will also learn new behaviors and coping strategies that you can use in stressful situations.Kleptophobia can also be treated using medications, hypnosis and different types of talk therapy. These treatments may also help other disorders that may be related, such as obsessive-compulsive disorder and general anxiety disorder.In the most severe cases of kleptophobia, anti-anxiety medication can be prescribed.Note:The above information is educational purpose.
