An obsolete term for a condition characterized by some of the following features: poor appetite or overeating, insomnia or hypersomnia, low energy or fatigue, low self esteem, poor concentration or difficulty making decisions, and feelings of hopelessness. In its most severe form it may become a chronic disturbance of mood called dysthymia (depressive neurosis) in which a depressive mood accompanies the features listed above.

The condition was explained as being a result of exhaustion of the central nervous system's energy reserves, which researchers attributed to modern civilization. Physicians in the school of thought-associated neurasthenia with the stresses of urbanization and with stress suffered as a result of the increasingly competitive business environment. Typically, it was associated with upper class people and with professionals working in sedentary occupations.

When your nervous system is irritated by something that exhausts you, it is better to flee from it. Work intensely but with moderation; remember that excessive work produces fatigue. If you do not pay attention to fatigue, if you continue with excessive work, then fatigue is substituted with excitement. When excitement turns morbid, it becomes neurasthenia. It is necessary to alternate work with pleasant rest; in this way we avoid the danger of falling into neurasthenia.

Employees who work under the orders of a Neurasthenic & faultfinding employer end up hating the job and the employer. No discontented employee works with pleasure. Many times Enterprises fail because the employees are discontented, dissatisfied. Take care of your Nervous system. Work minimally. Enjoy yourself wholesomely. Do not criticize anyone. Try to see the Best in all human beings.

Symptoms:

May experience rapid intense heartbeat that may be irregular (palpitations, tachycardia).

  • Cold extremities, clammy hands and feet.
  • Abnormally rapid breathing (hyperventilating).
  • Dizziness or faintness.
  • Periodic sighing.
  • Sweating for no apparent reason.
  • Be restless fidgeting.
  • Over-sensitivity.

Diagnosis:

The Tenth Revision of the World Health Organization's InternationalClassification of Diseases (ICD-10) presents a set of well-definedinclusion and exclusion criteria for thediagnosis.The coresymptoms are identified as mental and/or physical fatigue, accompanied by atleast two of seven symptoms (dizziness, dyspepsia, muscular aches or pains,tension headaches, inability to relax, irritability, and sleep disturbance).To make the diagnosis, it must be a persistent illness. Exclusion criteriainclude the presence of mood, panic, or generalized anxiety disorders.

Treatment:

Traditional therapy for neurasthenia has included eating healthier, regular light exercise, improved hygiene, massage, psychotropic medication, the appropriate use of rest, and adjustment of work or Lifestyle to decrease stress. Currently, antidepressant medication and psychological counseling are standard treatments of choice.

Amitriptyline (for pain and sleep regularization).
