A Compound in a Japanese Plant Can Be a Key to Extended Youth

A new study, performed by researchers from the University of Graz, Austria, finds that a compound known as 4,4'-dimethoxychalcone (DMC) in Japanese ashitaba can boost cellular health and prolong youth.

For the study, the researchers conducted experiments with the compound in yeast cells. The experiments showed that the substance really protected these cells from age-related damage. Moreover, the protection was more efficient compared with other compounds with similar benefits, such as resveratrol.

Study author Professor Frank Madeo, Ph. D., comments: “The experiments indicate that the effects of DMC might be transferable to humans, although we have to be cautious and wait for real clinical trials.”
