Aggressive Blood Cancer Is Not One But 11 Distinct Diseases

A study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, suggests that some patients respond to blood cancer treatment better than others due to the genetic differences. According to the detailed genetic analysis, one of the main types of blood cancer is not one but eleven distinct diseases.blood cancer

The study focused on acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), which is often aggressive, especially in older patients. Overall survival rate after 5 years is about 20%.

The team of researchers examined more than 100 genes known to cause leukaemia and investigated how they interacted.

The scientists believe that their findings can help with the development of corresponding clinical trials of blood cancer.

Dr. Áine McCarthy from Cancer Research UK said: "Science such as this continues to offer new insights into cancer which can help us achieve our goal of beating the disease.”
