There are much more people with this blood type in sub-Saharan Africa, a region where severe malaria is endemic, than in Europe or the US. Scientists argue that this phenomenon is one more evidence of evolutionary selection.

The meta-analysis of all 23 papers showed that 15 of them demonstrated the increased risk of severe malaria, or P. falciparum, among people with blood type A, B, AB, or non-O (A/B/AB).

Abraham Degarege Mengist from Robert Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work comments: “Now that we are starting to understand the mechanisms of how blood type can affect the progression of the disease, we are exploring various options that can one day help people in the regions where malaria is endemic.”
