Both Body Fat and Muscles Protect Women from Cardiovascular Disease

Recent research, conducted by scientists from the University of California, Los Angeles, suggests that in order to lower the risk of cardiovascular disease or acute cardiovascular event, women should focus on maintaining or increasing muscle mass rather than losing fat. Both Body Fat and Muscles Protect Women from Cardiovascular Disease

For their study, a team of researchers performed the analysis of data from 5,627 women and 5,836 men aged over 20, whose data were taken from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2004 and CVD mortality data from the same research for the period from 1999 to 2014.

The analysis showed that females with high body fat and high muscle mass had a 42% lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease than females with low muscle mass and low body fat.

The authors write in their paper: “[I]t demonstrates the potential importance of advice to maximize muscle mass in women. This diverges from the current emphasis on weight loss in CVD prevention, and thus methods to practically achieve such body composition alteration need to be further evaluated.”
