Extra Potent Broccoli Compound May Help with Eye Disease
Researchers from Buck Institute for Research of Aging boosted the potency of a broccoli-related compound by 10 times and identified it as a potential treatment for age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which is the leading cause of loss of vision in many people.
This research also highlights the role of lipid metabolism in maintaining the health of the retina, saying that palmitoleic acid also had protective effects on retinal cells in mice.
The broccoli compound is called indole3-carbinol (I3C), which is also being studied for cancer prevention.
This compound helps clear cells of environmental toxins by activating the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) protein which upregulates pathways involved in chemical detoxification. This protein, declining with age, is important for detoxifying the retina.
