Cocoa May Protect Males’ Blood Vessels from the Effects of Psychological Stress

Recent research, conducted by scientists from the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom finds that drinking cocoa, rich in flavonoids, may protect males’ blood vessels from the negative impact of physiological stress.Cocoa May Protect Males’ Blood Vessels from the Effects of Psychological Stress

For their study, the researchers recruited 30 healthy men aged 18 to 45. They had to fast for 12 hours before each session and do not consume alcohol and polyphenol-rich food and drink, and exercise 24 hours beforehand.

Senior author of the study Dr. Catarina Rendeiro, Ph.D., of the university’s School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences, says: “Our findings are significant for everyday diet, given that the daily dosage administered could be achieved by consuming a variety of foods rich in flavanols — particularly apples, black grapes, blackberries, cherries, raspberries, pears, pulses, green tea, and unprocessed cocoa.”
