Cutting Carbs from the Diet May Increase the Risk of Early Death
A major study from Harvard School of Public Health finds that eating carbs in moderation, up to 50–55% of the diet, is the healthiest option. People who eat less than 40% or more than 70% carbohydrates had a higher risk of premature death.
During the study, the researchers analyzed data provided by 15,400 people. The results of the analysis support the advice of Public Health England which suggests starchy carbohydrates should form the main components of a healthy diet.
Co-author of the study Professor Walter Willett of Harvard School of Public Health says: “These findings bring together several strands that have been controversial. Too much and too little carbohydrate can be harmful but what counts most is the type of fat, protein, and carbohydrate.”
