Eating More Fiber Connected to Lower Risk of Having PTSD

Recent research based on the analysis of data from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) finds that people who eat two or three sources of fiber a day have a lower risk to experience episodes of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) compared to those who eat less fiber.

The CLSA is a large study of the Canadian population that continues for over 20 years. Within the current study, the scientists examined the data for 27,211 individuals aged between 45 and 85 years, of these people, 1,323 had the diagnosis of PTSD.

Lead author Karen Davison, director of the Nutrition Informatics Research Group and health science program faculty member at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Surrey, British Columbia, says: “It is possible that optimal levels of dietary fiber have some type of mental health-related protective effect. This may have to do with short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which originate in the gut as SCFA molecules can communicate with cells and may affect brain function.”
