Eating Mushrooms Associated with Lower Depression Risk

A large-scale analysis from the Pennsylvania State University suggests that people who regularly eat mushrooms may have a lower risk of developing depression. However, the study authors say that the link is still a mystery, that’s why their results should be interpreted with caution.Eating Mushrooms Associated with Lower Depression Risk

For the study, a team of researchers analyzed the diet and mental health data of over 24,000 adults from the United States received between 2005 and 2016.

Epidemiologist Djibril Ba from Penn State says: “Mushrooms are the highest dietary source of the amino acid ergothioneine – an anti-inflammatory, which cannot be synthesized by humans. Having high levels of this may lower the risk of oxidative stress, which could also reduce the symptoms of depression.”
