Eating Vegetable Protein Can Significantly Cut the Risk of an Early Menopause
A new study from Harvard School of Public Health in Boston and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, USA, discovered that women who eat vegetable protein in the form of tofu, soy, nuts, and other foods can lower the risk of an early menopause by up to 60%.
The scientists followed 116,000 women from 1991 until 2011 when they were all post-menopausal. They concluded that those women who included at least 9% vegetable protein like tofu, soy, nuts, brown pasta, brown rice and whole grains had 59% lower risk of an early menopause compared to the women who ate less than 4% of vegetable protein.
The authors of the research write: “A better understanding of how dietary vegetable protein intake is associated with ovarian aging may identify ways for women to modify their risk of early onset menopause and associated health conditions.”
