Even a Short-Term Meditation May Ease Physical Pain

A new study from Yale University in New Haven, US, finds that a short-term, around 30 minutes, meditation can reduce negative emotions and ease physical pain. This works even for those who never practiced it before, the study says.Even a Short-Term Meditation May Ease Physical Pain

For the study, a team of researchers recruited 17 participants who have never practiced meditation aged between 18 and 45 and tested them under two experimental conditions.

In the first condition, the study participants looked at 30 negative images and 30 neutral images. The other condition they experienced painful and warm temperature stimuli 30 times each.

Study leader Hedy Kober says: “The ability to stay in the moment when experiencing pain or negative emotions suggests there may be clinical benefits to mindfulness practice in chronic conditions as well — even without long meditation practice.”
