In a recent study, the results of which were published in the journal mSystems, researchers from the University of California, Irvine (UCI) found that a 2-week increase in fiber intake significantly changed the gut microbiome.Even Short-term Increase in Fiber Significantly Changes Gut Microbiome

For their study, a team of scientists recruited 26 undergraduate students and their instructors from a biology course at UCI. During the first week of the study, the participants stuck to their normal diet and provided three stool samples for analysis. In the second week, the participants were instructed to eat 40 g of fiber every day. In the third week, the quantity of fiber was increased to 50 g per day, and the participants had to provide another three stool samples.

Dr. Katrine Whiteson, associate professor of molecular biology and biochemistry, co-director of the University of California, Irvine (UCI) Microbiome Initiative, and co-author of the study, says: “At this time during a pandemic, when we need our immune health and healthy vaccine responses, we encourage everyone to think about the plant diversity of their diets and add some beans, berries, and avocados where they can.”
