A new study from the Huazhong University of Science, China, suggests that excessive sleep may significantly increase the risk of stroke, by 85%.Excessive Sleep May Increase the Risk of Stroke by 85%

For the study, a team of researchers gathered information from 31,750 people in China. The participants' average age was 62 years and none of them had a history of stroke or any other serious condition at the baseline.

The collected data showed that 8% of the participants had a habit to take a nap longer than 90 minutes a day, and 24% of the participants slept at least 9 hours per night. Over the course of the study, 1,557 strokes happened.

The analysis showed that those who slept longer than 9 hours as well as were napping at daytime had 85% greater risk of stroke compared to those who slept and napped in moderation.

Dr. Xiaomin Zhang, the corresponding author of the paper, says: “These results highlight the importance of moderate napping and sleeping duration and maintaining good sleep quality, especially in middle-aged and older adults.”
