Extra-Virgin Olive Oil May Protect from Alzheimer’s Disease
According to a new research, published in the journal Annals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, extra-virgin olive oil may protect the brain from the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.
A team of researchers studied the effect of extra-virgin oil on the mouse model. The mice were genetically modified to have three basic symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease: memory impairment, the buildup of amyloid plaques, and neurofibrillary tangles.
The lead author of the study Dr. Praticò says: "This is an exciting finding for us. Thanks to the autophagy activation, memory, and synaptic integrity were preserved, and the pathological effects in animals otherwise destined to develop Alzheimer's disease were significantly reduced."
