The team of researchers conducted a double-blind study with 46 athletes. The participants were divided into two groups, one of which took spinach extract, and another took a placebo during 10 weeks.

Within the study period, the researchers took blood and urine samples to analyze them for ecdysterone and potential biomarkers of performance enhancement.

Results showed that the athletes receiving ecdysterone had significantly higher increases in muscle mass, and in vitro experiments replicated the findings.

The tests also showed significant increases in one-repetition bench press performance. At the same time, blood and urine tests didn’t reveal any signs of liver or kidney toxicity.
