Fast Walkers Are a Third Less Likely to Suffer from Heart Failure

A new study by researchers from Brown University in Rhode Island finds that fast walkers are more than a third less likely to suffer heart failure than those who walk slowly.Fast Walkers Are a Third Less Likely to Suffe from Heart Failure

For the study, a team of researchers tracked the health of 25,000 women aged 50 years and over, who self-reported their walking speed. The analysis of the available data showed that women who reported walking at an 'average' pace, 2-3 mph, had a 27% lower risk to suffer heart failure than 'casual' walkers, whose walking speed was less than 2mph. At the same time, women with the fastest walking pace, over 3mph, had a 34% lower risk.

Lead study author Dr. Charles Eaton says: “This study confirms other studies demonstrating the importance of walking speed on mortality and other cardiovascular outcomes. Given the limited time for exercise is frequently given as a barrier to regular physical activity, walking faster but for less time might provide similar health benefits as the recommended 150 minutes per week of moderate physical activity.”
