Green Tea Polyphenols Can Help Treat Tooth Sensitivity
A team of researchers, led by Dr. Cui Huang of the Wuhan University of China, has developed a new material based on green tea polyphenols that will help treat tooth sensitivity.
The researchers created a versatile biomaterial using the traditional material nano-hydroxyapatite but adding a green tea compound epigallocatechin-3-gallate (ECGC), the most active polyphenol in green tea.
The tests showed that the newly created material blocked microtubules and reduced permeability of dentin, tooth’s layer of bony tissue. The material also was resistant to erosion and abrasion, as well as protecting against S. mutans biofilm.
Dr. Huang and his colleagues note in their study: “Thus the development of the new material bridges the gap between multifunctional concept and dental clinical practice and is promising in providing dentists a therapeutic strategy for the management of the dentin surface to counter dentin hypersensitivity and caries.”
