Study: Nutrition Closely Connected to Mental Health
A recent SMILES trial examined the role of diet in mental health. It was of the first randomized controlled trials that followed the previous observational studies.
In this trial, 67 patients diagnosed with moderate or severe depression were divided into two groups. In addition to the prescribed treatment, the first group received dietary counseling, the second one social support for 12 weeks.
Those who had dietary changes ate more vegetables, fruits, whole grains, oily fish, extra virgin oil, legumes, and raw nuts (foods that are typical for a Mediterranean diet). The participants in this group were also allowed to eat red meat and dairy in moderation.
At the end of the study, researchers noted that patients from the diet group had significantly better improvements in depression symptoms compared to the group that received social support only.
