Heavy Drinking Can Be Harmful for the Lungs
Dr. Majid Afshar, the lead author, from Loyola University Chicago, said: “Alcohol appears to disrupt the healthy balance in the lung.”
The team of researchers analyzed data from more than 12,000 American adults. The researchers found that heavy drinkers (women who have one drink a day and men who have more than two drinks a day) and people who binge-drink at least once a month had less nitric oxide in their exhaled breath than non-drinkers. Binge-drinking was considered with the amount of four and more drinks per occasion for women and five and more for men.
The researchers also found that the more alcohol heavy drinkers consumed, the lower level of nitric oxide.
