High Protein Consumption Linked to Heart Health Risk

A new study from Pennsylvania (Penn) State University, US, finds that people who eat a lot of sulfur amino acids, present in protein-rich foods, have higher cardiometabolic risk.

For the study, the researchers analyzed data on diets and health status of 11,567 individuals which were accessed through the 3rd National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) conducted by the Center for Disease Control and Preventing (CDC).

The analysis of the received data showed that participants with higher sulfur amino acid intakes also tended to have higher composite cardiometabolic risk score meaning they have higher chances to develop such conditions as hypertension and diabetes.

The study team says that the sulfur amino acids are present practically in all foods, except for grains, fruit, and vegetables but meats and other high protein foods are generally higher in sulfur amino acid content.
