Higher Intake of Nitrites Increases the Risk of Developing Type 2 Diabetes

In a new study, which was published in PLOS Medicine, researchers examined the intake of nitrates and nitrites and the related risk for type two diabetes. They found that a higher intake of nitrites was linked to an increased risk for type two diabetes. However, there wasn’t a connected risk from nitrate intake.

In this study, the research team included over 100,000 adults in their analysis. Among all participants, almost 80% were female. All participants were asked to complete 24-hour dietary recalls, paying attention to nitrates and nitrites consumed. The participants were followed, on average, for 7.3 years.

Study authors write in their paper: “This is the first large-scale cohort study to suggest an association between additives-originated nitrites and a higher type-2 diabetes risk. It also corroborates previously suggested associations between total dietary nitrites and type-2 diabetes risk.”
