Laughter Boosts Physical Activity and Mental Health in Senior People
People say that laughter helps live longer and now, a new study from Georgia State University suggests adding some laughing to moderate exercise may improve mental health in senior adults. It also boosts their motivation and ability to engage in physical activity.
The study included 27 older adults, all of whom were residing in assisted living facilities. As a part of the study program, people were required to attend two 45-minute session per week for 6 weeks. The program created by the researchers is called LaughActive. It includes moderate physical exercises with simulated laughter techniques.
Celeste Green, the lead author of the study from the Gerontology Institute at Georgia State, says: “The combination of laughter and exercise may influence older adults to begin exercising and to stick with the program.”
