Learning Latin Dances Can Help Improve Your Memory

In a new study, a team of researchers at the University of Illinois and Indiana University found that regularly attending Latin dance classes such as salsa, samba, and merengue could help improve a person's short-term memory.Learning Latin Dances Can Help Improve Your Memory

For the study, the scientists gathered data from more than 300 people of Hispanic heritage in the Chicago, Illinois-area over the course of 4 years. All participants were divided into two groups, one of which had to attend twice-weekly dance classes for eight months. Another group attended weekly health education classes.

Lead author Dr. Susan Aguinaga, a kinesiology professor at Illinois, says: “The takeaway is definitely finding an activity that is enjoyable, that is appealing, and if dancing is that activity that provides enjoyment and physical activity and social support, then I think this is an activity that should be promoted more.”
