Mediterranean Diet May Improve Gut Health in Older People

A new study, conducted by researchers from institutions in eight countries, suggests that older people who eat a Mediterranean diet may have healthier gut microbiome and improve measures of frailty.Mediterranean Diet May Improve Gut Health in Older People

In the study, 612 participants aged between 65 and 79 years took part. Of these participants, twenty-eight individuals were qualified as fail with the help of medical exams, 151 were on the verge of frailty, and 433 showed no signs frailty. All study participants were assigned to adhere to the Mediterranean diet during the year.

Having analyzed the received results, the researchers concluded that the Mediterranean diet was associated with better gut microbiome which in its turn was connected to improved markers of frailty, including better walking speed, better handgrip strength, and better cognitive function.
