In their study, the researchers analyzed data of 69,744 females from the Nurses’ Health Study (NHS) and 1,429 males in the Veterans Affairs Normative Aging Study (NAS). Data from the first study included 10 years of the follow-up period from 2004 to 2014, and data from the second study covered a period of 30 years from 1986 to 2016.

Analysis of the available data showed that women and men with the highest levels of optimism at the baseline of the study lived on average 11–15% longer than people with the lowest level of optimism.

The corresponding author of the study Lewina O. Lee, Ph. D., says: “We hope that our findings will inspire further research on interventions to enhance positive health assets that may improve the public's health with ageing.”
