New Weight Loss Method: Food Consumption in Total Darkness
Scientists know very well that people suffering from obesity will be able to lose weight only if they will combine diet with regular physical activity. But the "pundits" and we know that to comply with this rule, we need a strong willpower, which not everyone can have.
Therefore, researchers are trying to find a way to get rid of extra kilos with the help of techniques, based on the features of human psychology. For example, it was found that the use of small plates makes a person subconsciously to put less food on it. The same effect is achieved in case, where the dining table covered with a tablecloth that is sharply contrasting in color with the plates color.
German scientists from the University of Konstanz propose to deal with overeating using an unusual method - a meal in the dark.
They invited 90 students of this university to participate in the study. Researchers served ice cream to all the participants. For the accuracy of results, the experiment was repeated three times, and each time the ice cream had a different sort. Half of the participants were eating ice cream in normal circumstances, and the other half before eating wore special glasses that exclude the ability to see anything.
Each time after the students ate a portion of ice cream, they had to estimate the amount of eaten food and determine the degree of saturation.
It turned out that the young participants who ate ice cream in the dark thought that the portions weight was 88% higher than it actually is (in the subgroup of "sighted" participants, the figure was 33%).
In addition, compared with participants who could see ice cream, the subjects of the "blind" group more frequently reported that they feel full saturation after eaten portions.
