Nordic Walking Is Particularly Beneficial for Heart Function

In a new study, published in the Canadian Journal of Cardiology, a team of researchers analyzed the impact of different types of exercise on patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) and found that all Nordic walking proved to be the most beneficial exercise for heart function.Nordic Walking Is Particularly Beneficial for Heart Function

This research included 130 participants with CAD already referred to a cardiovascular rehabilitation (CR) program. Participants completed a 12-week exercise program with a follow-up period over 14 weeks. Participants were prescribed to perform one of three different types of exercise programs:

  • high-intensity interval training (HIIT)
  • moderate-to-vigorous intensity continuous training (MICT)
  • Nordic walking

The analysis of the collected data showed that all exercises positively influenced all three areas: functional capacity, quality of life, and symptoms of depression. However, patients in the Nordic walking group felt the most benefit because Nordic walking increased functional capacity the most.
