Not Getting Sufficient Sleep Stifles Positive Feelings

A new study from Norway finds that people who sleep at least 2 hours less than usually became more impulsive and prone to making mistakes throughout the following day, as well as experience suppression of positive feelings.Not Getting Sufficient Sleep Stifles Positive Feelings

For the study, a team of researchers tracked 52 healthy adults whose age was from 18 to 35 years for 11 days. All participants wore motion sensors on their wrists to monitor their sleep. After sleeping the usual amount of time for 7 days, the participants went to bed 2 hours later than usual for the last 3 nights and woke up at their regular time.

The authors conclude in their paper: “These findings highlight that even 1–2 hours less sleep for a few nights is associated with negative consequences. Also, these findings show that even a small lack of sleep may have important implications for everyday function and quality of life, such as social interaction, work efficiency, and traffic safety, especially in the early morning.”
