People Playing Sports Have Healthier Brains, Study

A new study from Northwestern University suggests that people playing sports, such as football, soccer and hockey, have healthier brains than those who don’t play any game, under the condition that there are no injuries received.People Playing Sports Have Healthier Brains, Study

To investigate the influence of the sports, a team of researchers examined the brain health of 495 females and male Northwestern student-athletes and 493 age- and sex-matched control subjects. The scientists delivered speech syllables to the participants and recorded their brain’s activity.

After that, they analyzed the ratio of background noise to the response to the speech sounds determining how big the response to sound was relative to background noise.

The analysis showed that athletes had larger responses to sounds compared to the non-athletes. At the same time, musicians and people who speak more than one language have the same ability.
