Quitting Alcohol Drinking May Boost Mental Health
A new study from the University of Hong Kong (HKU) suggests that quitting alcohol drinking can boost mental health, especially in women.
For the study, the researchers analyzed data collected from 10,386 participants via the FAMILY Cohort Study at HKU. All of the participants in this study reported that they were nondrinkers or drank moderately.
Among the participants of the group, the five categories could be formed: those who used to drink, those who had recently started drinking, persistent drinkers, formerly persistent drinkers, and lifetime abstainers.
The analysis showed that people who never drank alcohol had the greatest level of mental well-being at baseline. Also, they noticed that people who quitted drinking, women in particular, had a significant boost in mental health.
