Regular Exercise May Prevent High Blood Pressure

A new study, published in the journal Circulation of the American Heart Association, suggests that people who regularly perform physical exercises usually have a lower risk of developing high blood pressure, even in areas of relatively high levels of air pollution.Regular Exercise May Prevent High Blood Pressure

For their study, a team of researchers studied more than 140,000 non-hypertensive adults in Taiwan and followed them for 5 years, on average. Scientists classified the physical activity levels on a weekly basis of each adult as inactive, moderately active, or highly active.

Study author Xiang Qian Lao, Ph.D., an associate professor at the Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care at The Chinese University of Hong Kong in Shatin, Hong Kong, says: “This is the largest study to analyze the combined effects of air pollution and regular physical activity on high blood pressure. Our findings indicate that regular physical activity is a safe approach for people living in relatively polluted regions to prevent high blood pressure. Exercise should be promoted even in polluted areas.”
