Shift Work Sleep Disorder Increases the Risk of a Car Accident by 300%

According to recent research, conducted by scientists from the University of Missouri, U. S., people who work nontraditional work hours have a higher risk to develop shift work sleep disorder and are three times more likely to be involved in a car accident.Shift Work Sleep Disorder Increases the Risk of a Car Accident by 300%

For the study, a team of researchers analyzed the data collected from a real-world driving study for the second Strategic Highway Research Program established by the U.S. Congress. The analysis showed that shift work sleep disorder increases the risk of a vehicle accident by approximately 300%, as compared to both sleep apnea and insomnia, which increased the risk of a crash by about 30%

One of the authors of the study Praveen Edara, department chair and professor of civil and environmental engineering, says: “This discovery has many major implications, including the need to identify engineering countermeasures to help prevent these crashes from happening. Such measures can include the availability of highway rest areas, roadside and in-vehicle messaging to improve a driver's attention, and how to encourage drivers who may have a late-night work shift to take other modes of transportation, including public transit or ride-share service.”
