A new study, conducted by researchers from the University of California, Irvine School of Ecology, U. S., suggests that smiling and grimacing may reduce the sensation of the pain linked to an injection similar to a shot using a vaccination needle.Smiling During Injection May Reduce the Needle Pain

For the study, the scientists recruited 231 participants who were divided into four groups and all received a shot of saline solution with the help of a needle similar to those used to deliver a flu vaccine. During the injection, the first group had a Duchenne smile, the second - a non-Duchenne smile, the third - a grimace, and the fourth group had a neutral expression.

The analysis of the received data showed that the effect of the induced facial expression was the strongest right after the injection. Also, participants from the Duchenne smile and grimace groups reported around 40% less needle pain compared to the neutral group.
