Stiffness of Muscles Can Be Measured With a Glove

Many peopel feel the rigidity of the muscles from time to time - after a serious workout, in cold weather or just after sleeping in an uncomfortable position. However, for people with cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, after a stroke, hard muscles are a daily reality, because of which even ordinary housekeeping become complicated and painful.The University of California, San Diego together with Radi Children's Hospital developed a technology that can accurately measure the rigidity of muscles with sensors. The doctor puts the device in the form of a glove on the hand, after which this hand moves the hand or foot of the patient. More than 300 sensors measure the force required for movement, and a special sensor measures the speed of movement of the limb. The glove is connected to the computer via a USB interface. The computer, in turn, calculates how much power it takes to move the patient's limb, and the more force is applied, the higher the spasticity of the patient's muscles.The device has already been tested on real patients - five patients with cerebral palsy.
