Study: Birth Control Pills Strongly Affect Women’s Wellbeing
A new study, executed by the team of researchers from the Karolinska Institutet, Sweden, finds that the oral birth control pills connected to the lower quality of life and wellbeing in healthy women.
For the research, the team of scientists took 340 healthy women aged from 18 to 35. One group of women received placebo pills, another group took contraceptive pills with ethinylestradiol and levonorgestrel over the period of 3 months. Having analyzed the received data, the researchers found that the women who were given contraceptive pills reported that their quality of life was significantly lower at the end of the study than those who were given placebos.
Niklas Zethraeus, one of the researchers, says: “This might in some cases be a contributing cause of low compliance and irregular use of contraceptive pills. This possible degradation of the quality of life should be paid attention to and taken into account in conjunction with prescribing of contraceptive pills and when choosing a method of contraception.”
