For the research, scientists monitored swimmers in London's Parliament Hill Lido and found that they have higher levels of the "cold-shock" protein, RBM3, in their bloodstream. This compound is known for triggering the destruction and regrowth of synapses.

Studies in mice have shown that this protein may help delay the onset of degenerative brain diseases. Researchers say that based on this study it is possible to develop a drug that can trigger the production of this protein and ward off the onset of dementia by years.
