Toddlers Who Regularly Use Touchscreens Are More Distractible

A new study from Birkbeck, University of London, King's College London, and the University of Bath finds that toddlers who use touchscreens on a regular basis are more distractible compared to toddlers who do not use touchscreens or use them seldom.Toddlers Who Regularly Use Touchscreens Are More Distractable

For the study, the scientists recruited 12-month-old infants with various levels of touchscreen usage. They were followed for the next 2.5 years with three visits to the laboratory at the age of 12 months, 18 months, and 3.5 years. During each visit, the kids had to complete computer tasks with an eye-tracker to measure their attention.

The lead author of the study Professor Tim Smith, from Birkbeck's Centre for Brain and Cognitive Development, says: “We found that infants and toddlers with high touchscreen use were faster to look at objects when they appeared and were less able to ignore distracting objects compared to the low users.”
