Urban Trees May Help Reduce the Risk of Depression

Recent research from the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) Halle-Jena-Leipzig suggests that daily contact with trees growing alongside the streets may help reduce the risk of depression.Urban tres reduce the risk of depression

For their study, researchers analyzed data from around 10,000 Leipzig inhabitants, a mid-size city in Germany, who participated in the LIFE-Adult health study running at the University of Leipzig Medical Faculty.

Combining these data with data on the number and species type of street trees in the city of Leipzig, the scientists found the link between antidepressant prescriptions and the number of street trees at different distances from people's homes.

Lead study author Dr. Melissa Marselle comments on the results of the study: “Our finding suggests that street trees -- a small scale, publicly accessible form of urban green space — can help close the gap in health inequalities between economically different social groups.”
