Your Friends’ Food Choices Influence Your Own Diet

A new study, conducted by a team of researchers from Aston University in Birmingham, UK, suggests that the food choices of the friends on social media have a significant influence on people’s own eating habits.Your Friends’ Food Choices Influence Your Own Diet

For the study, the scientists asked 369 university students to estimate the amount of fruit, vegetable, ‘calorie-dense snacks’, and sugary soft drinks their Facebook friends consumed every day and cross-referenced this information with the participants’ own eating habits.

The analysis results showed that those who thought that their social network friends ate more junk food, consumed more this type of food themselves. At the same time, those people who thought that their friends ate a lot of healthy food, fruits and vegetables, integrated more of it to their own diets.

Study leader Lily Hawkins, a PhD student in health psychology, says: “This study suggests we may be influenced by our social peers more than we realise when choosing certain foods. We seem to be subconsciously accounting for how others behave when making our own food choices.”
