Psychologist and business consultant Susan David explained why negative emotions can bring benefits.
Good mood and positive emotions lead to success and help to make the right decisions, reduce the risk of many diseases and prolong life.
However, positive feelings have its drawbacks.
Acording to Susan David, when we have too much fun, we tend to ignore the dangers and various threats. Excessive happiness could harm, in a state of joy and serenity people can go for a thoughtless risk: drinking too much alcohol, overeating, skip pills ( “I’m fine, what can happen?”).
Our mood affects the brain’s ability to process information. When everything in life is good and rosy, when the environment seems to be a safe and familiar, people tend to jump to conclusions and ignore the details.
Negative emotions contribute to a slower and systematic processing of data, focusing on all the important details. When a person is a bit scared and is in a state of excitement, he/she is less trusting and more skeptical to the incoming information, studying the facts more seriously.
Such negative emotions like anger, sadness, guilt or fear help a person to formulate specific arguments, improve memory, enhance the sense of justice. Also, negative thoughts stimulate to be persistent and move toward your goals, because if person feels good, why does he/she needs to strive for something?
