A new Australian study finds that eating high-fat and high-sugar junk food like waffles and milkshakes, may significantly affect your cognitive functions like memory and appetite control.
For the study, researchers recruited 102 young and healthy participants who were assigned to a week-long diet containing only fast food or to continue their usual diet. Before and after breakfast in the laboratory, the participants took a test on their food desires.
After one week, the authors noticed that the observed changes in appetite control were strongly correlated with hippocampal-dependent learning and memory measures.
The authors write in their paper: “More broadly, this experiment, alongside those from the other animal and human studies cited here, suggests that a Western-style diet causes neurocognitive impairments following short-term exposure.”
