Smoking Thickens Heart Wall Leading to Heart Failure

There are many reasons to quit smoking already, but scientists have found one more. According to the study, published in the journal Circulation: Cardiovascular Imaging, smoking thickens the heart wall, reducing its pumping ability and increasing the risk of heart failure.heart-wall

Nevertheless, the mechanism by which tobacco damages the heart and causes cardiovascular events has not been found yet. The data, received in the research, showed a clear relationship between the amount of tobacco smoked, the size of the left ventricle wall, and reduction in pumping function.

Dr. Wilson Nadruz Jr., Ph.D., the lead author of the study, says: “The more people smoke, the greater the damage to the heat’s structure and function, which reinforces the recommendations stating that smoking is dangerous and should be stopped.”
