A new study from the University of Illinois suggests that adults who have high levels of lutein, a protective compound contained in leafy green vegetables, are better to recall things they learnt a long time ago.
For their study, the scientists tested 122 adults aged between 65 and 75on their crystallised intelligence. They also collected blood samples to determine levels of lutein and conducted MRI scans to analyse brain structures. They found that participants with higher blood serum levels of lutein tended to do better on the tests.
Aron Barbey, lead researchers, says: “We can only hypothesise at this point how lutein in the diet affects brain structure. It may be that it plays anti-inflammatory role or aids in cell-to-cell signalling.”
