Sleeping once a day throughout the night is not that good for us, scientists believe. According to a new research, we need to be sleeping twice a day for shorter periods. Researchers argue that the idea we need at least 8 hours per night is relatively new.
Dr. Melinda Jackson, a psychologist specializing in sleep disorders at RMIT University, and Siobhan Banks, sleep researcher at the University of South Australia, claim that segmented, or bi-modal, sleeping used to be the norm previously. From medical texts to court records and diaries, throughout history there is are evidence of bi-modal sleep and such patterns are seen today in cultures that have siestas, they add.
Researchers suggest that sleeping twice a day may increase alertness through the day and make people more flexible to carry out work and spend time with their family.
